202. 一個人若能處處替別人著想,心中時時關心他人,就不會斤斤計較於自己的利害得失,也才能從犧牲自己,幫助他人中,得到快樂。

If one always thinks of and cares about others, one will detach from haggling over one’s own gains and losses, thus obtain happiness from benefiting others at his own sacrifice.

 

203. 菩薩度眾生,就是要在複雜的環境中,學習不染污心;但必須要有強烈的出離心,才能真正的自度度他。

In helping sentient beings, a bodhisattva needs to remain unstained in the complexity of environment. However, only a strong renunciation can really benefit oneself and others.

 

204. 在社會人群中,大家都要互相依賴才能生存,因此,每個人都要盡一己之力,為大眾服務,以回饋社會大眾。

People should depend on each other in order to survive. Therefore, everybody should do his best to serve the society.

 

205. 有句話說:「人生不要留白」,就是不要浪費生命,要充分利用每一分、每一秒寶貴的時間,時時刻刻做自利利他的工作。

“Leave no blank to life” means no waste of one’s life and making full use of every minute, every second to benefit oneself and others.

 

206. 一天只有二十四小時,扣除吃飯、睡眠,能工作的時間相當有限。若只是斤斤計較他人做多少,是愚痴的行為,應該要問自己做了多少。因為這是積功累德的機會,不要白白失去修福的良機。

Quite limited is the working time in a day of 24 hours besides meals and sleep. What a stupid action to haggle over how much others do! Ask how much one has done. Don’t let slip this great chance to create blessings.

 

207. 我們能享受現有的一切,是很多人辛苦付出的結果,因此對自己所負責的工作,要有責任感,認真的把它完成,才能回饋所有的人。

All we can enjoy now is the result of many peoples’ hard work, therefore, we should be responsible for our job and do it well so as to pay back all people.

 

208. 做事不要把權利擺在前面,而是要把責任擺在第一。不肯發心做事,或工作時斤斤計較,是愚痴的行為,因為失去了修福報的機會。

At work, place responsibility before right. Unwillingness to work or haggling over trifles at work is stupid because it loses the chance to accumulate blessings.

 

209. 不起歡喜心做事是業障深重;肯發心做事就是有福報的人。

Heavy karmic obstruction makes one work with no joy. It is a blessing to work with pure motivation.

 

210. 有福報,才能過安逸的日子。但福報是自己修來的,不是從天降下來的,因此要多發心為眾生服務。有福報才能繼續累積福報;但從沒有福報到有福報,必須經過一段時間的辛苦付出。

A comfortable life requires blessing which is the result of cultivation rather than the grant from heaven. Therefore, we should make great vow to serve sentient beings in order to accumulate more blessings. However, it needs series of painstaking service to progress from no blessing to having blessings.

 

211. 現在社會充滿自私自利者,而缺少捨己利人者,因此,佛教捨己利人的菩薩道,正是治世的妙方。

Nowadays most people are selfish, therefore, the bodhisattva altruism is the key to save the world.

 

212. 生病的人,最需要人照顧,如果能發心照顧病人,是菩薩慈悲心的表現,功德最大。

The patients need badly others’ looking after, therefore, it is the most virtuous thing to look after them as it is the manifestation of bodhisattva’s compassion.

 

213. 如果發心利他時,又想到這個人我該不該幫助他,這就是眾生的分別心,這是不對的。發心行菩薩道,要冤親平等,才是最可貴的。

It is discriminative and wrong in rendering help with hesitation. Regarding friends and enemies as equals is the most precious in bodhisattva path.

 

214. 做一位菩薩,是要時時、處處,都站在他人的立場,替別人著想,而不是只站在自己的立場,為自己著想。要隨時想一想,自己的言行舉止,是否造成對方的困擾與煩惱。

A bodhisattva should always put himself in others’ places, care about others in lieu of himself, and reflect whether or not his own speech or action causes troubles and vexations to others.

 

215. 度眾生的根本精神:

一:慈無量心-無緣慈,怨親平等。

二:悲無量心-同體悲,不分人我。

三:喜無量心-見他離苦得樂,心生喜悅。

四:捨無量心-心運慈悲,而無染著。

The spirits in helping sentient beings:

Boundless benevolence: unconditional loving kindness to treat enemies and friends equally.

Boundless compassion: universal compassion with no differentiation between self and other.

Boundless joy: pleasure to see others’ ridding afflictions and gaining happiness.

Boundless equanimity: generating loving kindness and compassion without attachment.

 

216. 度眾生的根本綱領:

一:布施-雪中送炭,給與溫暖。

二:愛語-和顏愛語,親善依附。

三:利行-利益眾生,感恩受度。

四:同事-同成其事,伺機感化。

The essentials in helping sentient beings:

Charity giving: to help those in need with warmth.

Loving words: to befriend people with kind expression and loving words

Beneficial actions: to benefit sentient beings with gratitude for receiving my help.

Working together: to find opportunity to influence others while working together.

 

217. 只要有菩薩心、責任感,就能將事情做好,能力與體力的不足,是能夠克服的。

Things can be done well with bodhisattva mind and sense of responsibility. Insufficiency of mental and physical powers can be overcome.

 

218. 「發心」,是發自於內心,也就是從內心激發出能量,使能量發揮無窮無盡的功能;而佛陀就是把能量發揮到最高點的聖人。

“Generating the mind” means to inspire the innermost energy to develop its boundless capacity, and Buddha is a sage who utilizes this energy to the greatest extent.

 

219. 現在社會上的人,都是為自己的利益而犧牲他人;菩薩道則是犧牲自己而利益人群。所以唯有行菩薩道,才能消除社會亂象。

Nowadays people sacrifice others’ interest for their own while bodhisattvas do the opposite way, therefore, only the bodhisattva path can eliminate the social chaos.

 

220. 菩薩四攝法中的同事攝,不是同流合污,而是與眾生打成一片,藉機度化眾生。

Working together, one of the Four Bodhisattva Methods of Winning People Over, is not to do bad things together but to get along well with sentient beings so as to find the opportunity to teach them.

 

221. 自動自發、默默付出,就是菩薩。

A bodhisattva is the one who renders service willingly and silently.

 

222. 修行人要以常不輕菩薩行,表現佛教絕對平等的倫理,自修化他、同登覺岸。

Practitioners should follow the example of Sadapribhuta Bodhisattva in showing Buddhist ethic of ultimate equality to cultivate oneself and to teach others in order to attain enlightenment together.

 

223. 熱心關懷他人,就會忘記自己的苦難。唯有把自己的事情看輕、看淡,肯犧牲自己,才能關心他人、照顧他人,也才能與菩薩道相應。

Warm caring for others will make us forget our own sufferings. Only belittling our own business and willing to sacrifice can make us concern others and take care of others. Only this complies with bodhisattva path.

 

224. 「布施」有二意:

第一、遍布,是普遍的給予、施捨,幫助他人。

第二、擴散,是將所施者的功德擴散出去,使其能得到更大的功德。

Two meanings of “charity giving”:

Spreading: universal giving to help others.

Expanding: enlarging the merits of donation.

 

225. 「方便是用,智慧是體」,不論做任何事情,都必須運用無分別的智慧,才能契合真理,但也要有方便的差別智,才能看清楚世間的真相,把事情做的更圓滿,而達到廣度眾生的目的。

“Expedience is the function and wisdom the essence”. No matter what we are doing, we must utilize not only the non-discriminative wisdom to conform to the truth but also the discriminative wisdom of expedience to see the worldly reality and to do things more completely so as to accomplish the goal of teaching all beings.

 

226. 佛教是人為(人文主义、人本主义?)主義,而不是神權主義的宗教。「如是因,如是果」,自己的行為,自己要承受其果報,他人是無法代替的,這是佛教的教義與其他宗教不同之處。

Buddhism is humanistic rather than theocratic. “What the cause and conditions are, what the effect is.” We must bear the result of our own actions, irreplaceable by others. This is the difference between Buddhism and other religions.

 

227. 多吃一餐素,就少吃一餐葷,減少一分殺業,而增加一分功德。提倡素食,就是要減少殺業;能減少殺生,就會減少戰亂,而導致社會安寧,世界太平。

One more vegetarian meal we take, one less meat meal we take. Thus one less karma of killing is made, one more merit is gained. The promotion of vegetarian foods aims to minimize killing so as to minimize wars and chaos, and to induce social stability and global peace.

 

228. 做事的成敗關鍵:

知己知彼,百戰百勝。不知己彼,必遭慘敗。

Key to success: Knowing oneself and enemy always leads to victory; not knowing oneself and enemy always results in disastrous defeat.

 

229. 努力工作的人雖然辛苦,卻露出喜悅的笑容,因為他們找到了人生的目標與生命的意義。

Hard working people, although fatigue, have joyful smiles because they have found the goal and meaning of life.

 

230. 最令人尊敬的是,那些始終堅持在自己工作崗位上,辛苦努力的人。

The most respectable are those who always work hard and stick to their posts.

 

231. 想要得到國泰民安,世界和平,必須提倡戒殺與護生。

The state’s prosperity, the people’s stable living, and the world peace start from the promotion of no-killing and life protection.

 

232. 只要有願力,再困難的事,也能夠慢慢做成功。

Achievement can be gained by will, no matter how difficult things are.

 

233. 現在社會秩序混亂,人心險惡,必須弘揚菩薩道,才能挽救日益沈淪的社會。

In this chaotic and bad-willed society, only promotion of bodhisattva path can save it from degenerating.

 

234. 把自己分內的工作做好,讓人生起歡喜心、清淨心,就是功德;相反的,讓人生起厭惡心、煩惱心,就是罪過。

To do one’s own work well to cause others happy and pure is merit; vice versa, to cause others disgusted and vexed is demerit.

 

235. 真正發心為眾生、為佛教,才能解決自己的煩惱;因為關心他人,自己就沒有時間生煩惱。

Vexations can be resolved only by the true aspiration to serve sentient beings and Buddhism because we will have no time to arouse vexations when caring for others.

 

236. 身為一位佛教徒,不只求自己的解脫,更應該發起菩薩心,以慈悲的願力,去關懷社會、幫助他人。

As Buddhists we should not only pursue our own liberation but also generate bodhisattva vow to care for the society and help people with compassion.

 

237. 要使社會祥和、安樂,要從提倡戒殺、護生、放生開始。

Peace and happiness starts from the promotion of no-killing, life protection and captive-life-releasing.

 

238. 發菩提心的可貴,在於能自動自發的為眾生服務。

The preciousness of generating bodhicitta lies in serving sentient beings voluntarily.

 

239. 福報是修來的,不是求來的,沒有福報就會有苦惱,所以必須多發心為眾生服務。

Blessings are gained through cultivation rather than pray. No blessings will induce vexation. Therefore, we should make greater vow to serve sentient beings.

 

240. 受人之託處理事情,如果不是違法的事,就不要為難他人,盡量給人方便,與眾生結善緣,不要結惡緣。

We should give convenience as much as possible to others’ request, if not illegal. Create good relation, not bad relation, with others.

 

241. 做事要有二種心:一、修福報、做功德的心;二、累積經驗學習的心。

Doing things with two kinds of mentality: to cultivate blessings, and to accumulate experience.

 

242. 要度眾生、要帶動群眾,自己要先有犧牲、奉獻的精神,率先垂範。

Be a model in sacrifice and dedication so as to teach and inspire people.

 

243. 無論對待任何人,都要以平等心對待,不可有分別心,才能廣結善緣。

Good interpersonal relation comes from treating everyone equally without discrimination.

 

244. 能夠成就他人,讓人法喜充滿,就是功德無量。

The merit is immeasurable in helping others succeed and have joy of dharma.

 

245. 做一位菩薩,要難行能行、難捨能捨、難忍能忍。

A bodhisattva does what is hard to do, gives what is hard to give, and endures what is hard to endure.
