Credibility, Learning and responsibility

Recently, I attended a farewell party for a high-level banking chief, and it was also a welcome party for the new boss. I gained some inspiration by this event. At the farewell party, this high-level chief commented upon his decades of banking career, and the reasons he was able to be promoted to a high-level chief and retired with honor. The experience he liked to share with everyone is “Credibility and Learning.”

Credibility is the foundation to get on in the world. If one has no credibility, we could say he has low value. Because he is unreliable, nobody is willing to offer an important job for him. A factory without credibility cannot guarantee delivery on time, cannot secure expected quality either; therefore no clients would give continuing orders to these kinds of factories.

If a restaurant has no credibility, it can’t pay its suppliers on time, thus the suppliers will not provide it more products, or probably just provide it with low quality merchandise.

If a store has bad credibility, cannot guarantee quality merchandise, or raises up prices unreasonably high, this would make the customers feel cheated. After a period of time, the customers will abandon this store.

What is credibility? It is trust, to be trustworthy, tell no lies and fulfil promises. Reputation is achieved by doing especially good and makes it become a kind of advantage. Credibility is having achievement based upon reliability. Keep this credibility for a long time, and it will become a “brand.” The value of a brand can increase continually along with time.

Learning is to learn from friends, from clients around us. Leaning their strong points, we can use their shortcomings to alert ourselves, so we can correct our flaws in time. We can learn from books, so there is the saying that says, “There’re golden houses in books.” We can learn from people, as the old saying, “A conversation with a wise man is worth more than ten-year study.” We can learn from everything, it is called “case study.” The content of learning includes “knowledge and skills.” This is also called, “dealing with matters and getting along with people.” So the key is, “Learn to work in work, learn to live in life.”

Other than credibility and learning, if one wants to be successful in life, it’s better to have “responsibility” this essential element as well.

Responsibility to oneself means that in the teenager period, one should study hard, so we can support ourselves when we start to work. Responsibility to family means supporting family, keep them warm and fed, give our children a better education, provide a comfortable environment, or at least have a safe shelter.

To the clan, let everyone get what they need for living, a sense of security, a peaceful and happy family, and a chance to achieve their potential.

To society, we should let everyone have a job, to be able to stay warm and fed, have healthcare security, and have basic life security. Responsibility is the motivation for work and lives. If we are able to bear the responsibility, we can stay active and vigorous, and make effort for success. We will endure when we encounter difficulties, find ways to overcome the problems, and deal with them bravely.

Without responsibility, or avoiding responsibility, we make it easy to get lazy, sluggish, and try to get by however we can. Work and life without aims, we can suffer a lack of enthusiasm, be lazy, shirk responsibility at work, and find it easy to give up when facing difficulties and frustrations. Thus, giving up is the biggest failure in life.
