Reviewing “One Heart and Three Willings”

Author Charles Yeung

When young people start to work in society, how can they reach to the top steps of success? Simply put, the basic requirements are they must have “one heart and three willings.”

One heart means: the brave heart of carrying responsibilities, the heart willing to carry burdens.

For example, Yao is the earliest emperor recorded in ancient China; he was a virtuous monarch who was willing to carry responsibilities. According to The New Book of political modification by Gu Yi in original Chinese literature, “吾存心於千古,加志於窮民,痛萬姓之罹罪,憂眾生之不遂也。故一民或饑,曰:此我饑之也;一民或寒,曰:此我寒之也;一民有罪,曰:此我陷之也。

The interpreted meaning is, “I intend to do the undertakings that people for thousands of years think we should do, that is to commit to do public service for the toilsome people. When civilians suffer, my heart feels the pain; when civilians do not get the life they want, I worry. So, when civilians are hungry, I would think it is me who caused their hunger; when civilians suffer from cold, I would think it is me who caused their chill; when civilians commit crimes, I would think it is me who caused them to commit the crimes.” In the description above, he felt their sufferings as if they were his own feelings. He had a sense of sharing the same body and the same heart with all beings.

Furthermore, the ancient politician Fan Zhong Yan had a highly praised, famous saying, “Be the first to concern with the world’s troubles and the last to rejoice in its happiness.” This means there is a kind of people, who will prepare for danger in times of peace; they will prepare for the future in times of comfort. When other people are happy, they will be happy. The above description has revealed the essence of noble responsibility.

Yes, if one does not take his own responsibility, a family wouldn’t be a happy family; a country wouldn’t be a peaceful and enjoyable country; the society wouldn’t be able to function properly; people might be idle all day and achieve nothing.

Because, when one can take his own responsibility, one can make decisions and fill his heart with ambition. He will march forward courageously when encountering difficulties, and he will never give up. This is called self-love, self-respect. The most important step of life is to start from the here and now. Therefore people say the biggest failure is to abandon oneself; to give up on oneself.

When one is responsible, he will respect himself, show concern for himself, take care of himself, and remind himself that he needs to learn more. Then he will show self-discipline in his behavior, his life, and his virtue.

When an enterprise or a family is not doing well, problems are usually created by members of that enterprise or family who do not act upon their own duties. If every member does the best for his duty, the enterprise or the family will grow healthily in progress.

“The three willings” are willing to learn, willing to work hard, and willing to let others take advantages.

Learning is the key method of improving oneself. The ancients said, “If there is no teaching, the nature will deteriorate.” “If a man does not learn, he cannot know his duty towards his friends and neighbors.” Furthermore, there are old sayings such as, “There’s no end in earning” and “A lifetime of learning.”

Learning is not limited to the knowledge found in books, as one must also strive to learn in life and to learn the reason for getting along with people and dealing with matters. Other than willing to learn, one also needs to practice continually. “Success needs hard work” means we need to work hard and practice diligently, as the common saying said, “A warrior should practice his skills constantly; a singer should practice his tune frequently.”

Besides, there are few people willing to let others take advantage of them at work or in life. As the ancient man Zuo Zong Tang said, “When we work with people, we need to learn to let them take advantage of us.” So, when we work with others, if we voluntarily let others take advantage of us, it often can solve complicated problems. If two people keep fighting against each other, neither of them is willing to be taken advantage of, and they will never be able to cooperate with each other. Willing to be at a disadvantage is a kind of recessive investment. If one likes to take advantage of others in everything while working with people, eventually he will end up with no friends, and his social circle will be smaller and smaller, and nobody will be willing to help him out. Letting others take advantage of us means we sometimes can get more in return.

In Glorious Sun enterprises, we often emphasize “learn how to be a good person before one learns to deal with matters.” If we want to learn some kind of skill, it might take one week if we are quick learners; it might take one year if we are slow learners, but we will learn it eventually. It is hard if we want to follow the rules, maintain a faithful attitude and work on it for ten years without failing. Learning one kind of knowledge is not difficult, but it is difficult to apply that knowledge to work and to daily life. It is even harder to maintain it for a long time. When being among people, we need to be humble, and learn to make concessions and be happy to help others. It is not difficult to understand this principle, but it is very difficult to do it for a life-time.

Thus, other than willing to learn, willing to work hard, and willing to let others take advantage of us, we also need to cultivate a serious attitude and strong endurance; improve ourselves, increase our knowledge, and increase our wisdom continually, and then we will be able to make constant progress. Though these concepts seem to be cliché, they are the best ways of the world, and the truth for all times.
